This day and half long workshop is for writers whose work is immersed in place, whether the natural or built world. We will begin by exploring our lives to reveal the relationships we have to the places we have lived and travelled. We will then write together to create complex portraits. In the end, we will see how place becomes a character within a work of fiction or nonfiction.
7-9:30: Mapping our lives. In this workshop we will begin with the visual, creating maps of our lives, highlighting not only where we have lived and traveled but where we bought our bread, how often it rained, who we have loved. From these details we will embark on our first writings.
Morning yoga or walk
Workshop one: 1.5 hours 9-10:30
This first workshop will be generative, as we freewrite together in relation to the locations on our maps. We will write and read our work in a group, pointing toward language that resonates and to moments when metaphor surfaces.
Half hour break
Workshop two: 11-12:30
Telling the truth, creating art. Telling the truth about a place is as complex as telling the truth about a person. Getting at that truth is the first step toward a complex piece of writing but alone doesn’t make for great writing. We will discuss theat movement from truth to art in our own work and the work of others.
2 hours to lunch/walk/kayak
Workshop three: 2:30-4:00
Finding the perfect detail/expanding from the inside out. In this workshop we will discuss revision, especially expanding, developing scenes and the details within those scenes.
